I am having problems with my steering. I need help. When i turn to the right i can get a full turn. when im turning to the left the wheel barely turns. it just stops. every once and a while when you turn to the right it will not go back left. i have no clue what it could be. please help!
If your truck is Still equipped with the old style power steering system , I think I know what your problem IS---inside the control valve that has the 4 hydraulic lines attached to it , there is a thing called a"Spool Valve" , this valve is what controls the flow of hydro oil too the slave cylinder (i.e., right turn<<>>left turn) , the spool valve get its marching orders from the manual steering box and routes the flow of fluid to the slave valve----if the spool is malfunctioning your desired steering wheel instructions will not be interpretated correctly and the truck becomes hard to steer----mine is currently acting in this fashion and it will soon be replaced as the money becomes available---it just ruins the whole experience of enjoying your truck!!!!!! fd
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Sep-02 AT 02:32 PM (EST)]Its a 73 F250 4x4. it has manual steering. it turns just fine to the right and after less than one turn of the wheel to the left it just stops, like it has hit a wall. i just put a newly rebuild 77 manual box on so it cant be in there.
There are a few possibilities with manual steering gear. Possibly (but not likely because of the bends in the linkage on I beam stuff) there is a tie rod adjusting collar turned up and hanging up on some other part, ending the turn too soon. Someone may have pulled the pitman arm off to adjust the box, then replaced if after the steering wheel was acidentally turned. Does it steer way far to the right (this is actually rather common for beginners)? The only other problem I can think of is trouble in the box itself. Polkat
Now that I think about it, there is a keyway in most sector shafts that only allows the pitman to go on one way, so that's not likely the problem either. Hanging linkage or bad box it seems.
