I have an intermittent overheating problem on my 97 4.2 L automatic 2wd F150. Once in a while the temp gauge climbs toward the red (higher than normal) and when it does the oil pres. gauge crashes at idle (in gear) causing the warning light to come on. I changed the oil and filter (because it was easy) and also the radiator cap on the overflow bottle (because an intermittent heating problem on a chevy v6 years ago was solved that way). Anyway, I still have the problem.
1. Has this been seen before on the 4.2?
2. What do I try next, water or oil pump?
3. Is it trade-in time?
It could be many things. Clogged radiator, weak clutch fan, failing water pump. I would get it repaired ASAP. The 4.2 doesn't like to get hot and will blow a head gasket if your not careful.
You might try down in the 4.2L forum that is farther down the main forum page. There is a lot of good info in there about these engines.
