I had a complete EGR valve failure on my '03 X w/6.0 PSD back in January. Dealer replaced it and "cleaned EGR tract" at $680 then. Now, I think it is getting ready to start acting up again. I have noticed that engine occasionally lacks power just above idle until about 2000 RPM, then runs OK. I do get an extra puff of black smoke when I trounce it. Similar preliminary conditions I had back in January.
Yes, I know it would be simpler to unplug. However, this is new technology that we are all going to have to adapt to--kind of like oxygen sensors back in the late 80s. Maybe it will work well once 2007 rolls around with improved diesel.
Rather than unplugging the wires, I would prefer to keep it functional if at all possible.
My question: How hard is it to remove the EGR valve and clean it periodically? Or is it possible that the EBP (assume this is Exhaust Back Pressure) transducer is faulty or blocked? Will cleaning EGR valve be enough or do I need to clean entire EGR cooling pipe?
Removing the EGR valve is not too difficult however you will need the right tools and the ability to work it up out of it's bore. I do not recommend using channel-lock pliers!
As far as cleaning goes, cleaning the valve is not recommended by ford but I would advise it cant hurt if you are doing so for a maintenance purpose. If you already have a problem with the valve then it should be replaced as cleaning won't fix it.
