Make sure..........MAKE SURE...........you get the grease fitting in line so you can grease them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Notice what side the little fitting is stick out. The fittings are offset to one side of joint, and if you put it in on the other side....you WON'T be able to get the grease gun on it! I did this on one joint in my '67 and I'll have to drop the shaft out to get enough room to grease it .
Ya, doing this for the first time will be a real learning experience, but once you get the hang of it you'll see it's not that hard,,, but it's the little details like I mentioned that makes you NOT have to tear it apart again...LOL!!
And if this thing see's the offroad a lot, you'll find yourself stashing a spare joint in the glovebox, along with a 1/2" wrench, brass punch and hammer.
Okay, this is the situation and I'm about to have a coniption fit. The pressure plate that I bought won't bolt up, the patterns are different, so I took it back and got my old one back. Well, the disc that I bought is too big, 1/2" too big. I checked and double checked the part numbers vs. the application and it's right. So I'm making calls and a guy tells me that he can get me a kit and the disc is 11 1/2". Well, that's too big for my pressure plate. He tells me that his computer screen is telling him that when you buy this kit, changing the flywheel is recommended.

I went to the Advance Auto site and found the 747. I'll order it tommorrow and hopefully that'll be the end of it. I'll go back and rebuy the pressure plate. This has been a real test of patience.
When I built my 390 I got a new flex plate and starter. Put the engine in got everthing hooked up, you know all the little things you have to do when you put a ehgine back in. promply burnt a starter. Replace it. Stripped the starter gear, replaced it lost the teeth on the new flexplate. Had to pull the engine to replace it. 20 hrs. on the motor and it is on its third starter and second flexplate. Sometines you have to get past the bad to have fun.
BTW, it was just bad parts no misalignment or anything like that.
lemme know if that "747" doesn't work out with your pressure plate. I'll find out which centerforce P/P I used and maybe you can from there. Sorry, had to many beers from having to work on a chebbie to remember right now......
It looks like you have "Advance Auto Parts" stores over in Alabama. Have you checked with them? I had to tell them that my engine came from a '69 Torino just so they could pull up a 390! Make sure it's "747" and it should work fine! It'll only cost ya about $45 bucks. If they don't have it I don't know what to tell ya! Maybe it's just time to upgrade.......
I always like thinking that if something breaks you might as well one up it so it doesn't break next time!
I called two of them yesterday. I work part-time at Autozone and, believe it or not, after Advance ordered a ring gear for me instead of a flywheel, I found one in our AZ computers. I had to order from a 75 F-100. Problem is, it'll be in Wednesday after 3pm and my class (Army ANCOC) starts that morning so I spent the better part of yesterday evening/last night putting everything back together with the old stuff with the benefit of the resurfaced old flywheel. I'll have everything I need soon and I'll try again Labor Day weekend. Thanks for the help guys and I'll let yall know how everything goes.
Ouch, sorry bud. I guess you won't have to drive it for too long though before you plan on replacing it again. I think I had the same idiot order me a ring gear too! He was trying to tell me that it was the same thing as a flywheel......I thought about warning ya but didn't think the same idocy would strike twice! I think what helped me the most was removing the exhaust pipes (I have headers) and having an extra pair of hands/eyes to help out. Better luck next time.
Thanks. I really believe it would be easier to pull the tranny/engine together. I"ve got one of those motohats (take the carb off and bolt the hat on) so I don't have to disassemble the top of the motor to pull it. I got some copper header gaskets and they suck. My headers aren't perfectly flat so they don't seal and it's driving me crazy. The truck doesn't shake on take off now so I can't complain too much if everything isn't perfect.
