I have a '78 F-100 with a 302 that has a miss fifty percent of the time.I have the Duro-Spark which came with the truck. My coil was bad {Arking at the coil boot}. It was really bad before I replaced that. Sometimes it will stop missing on it's own and my speed will increase 5 mph right away. New plugs didn't help. Distributor looks good. Two questions..
1. Can I remove the plug wires at the distributor and test them rather then as the book say's "Remove the plug wires and hold them a quarter inch away from the ground to check your spark or can I check for a spark gap between the plug wire and the plug with an extended piece of metal between the boot and the plug?. I don't seem to have any luck by pulling a plug wire and listen to see If my miss gets worse. Seems like there is hardly a change when I pull any of the plug wires off.
2. Anyone have any secrets on different ways or short cuts to check out a rough running engine? The carb. was just recently rebuilt and I'm 99 percent the problem is electrical. More plug wires didn't help either.
Go to your local autoparts store and pick up a spark tester. They are cheap. They plug into the plug end of the wire and clamp to the engine for a ground. This way you don't get shocked either.
Start the engine in a really dark spot and while the engine is running ,look for a *light show* under the hood where the wires are shorting out(if they are).
