Trouble resetting compas

On saturday I went to an open parking lot and tried to reset my compas in my '99 ED expy. I had my owners manual out and I was fallowing the directions by it wont work. When you push up on the button under the sensor it does nothing at all. It just sits there and does not bring up CAL or the other function. Whats wrong with my compas? Is there another way to reprogram it?

Can you unplug it to try to "hard boot" it? Sun heat is no friend to electrical parts.

Shane, I had the same problem and I could not get mine to reset and it was way off. Well to make a long story short my battery was on the way out. I replaced the battery and now it works fine.

Hmm... thats interesting Garff. There is some battery terminal corrotion on one of the terminals right now. Maybe if I clean it up it will start working again.

Personally, I believe the cure to Garff's problem was when replacing the battery, it powered down the system thus resetting it. You may only have to disconnect the positive battery terminal for about a minute and reconnect it.
I don't have the same mirror you have, but your problem is a common one with electrical components and the cure is to reset it.
Since you will have the terminal off and have seen corrosion, NAPA has a spray (Lynx battery cleaner) that will eat off the corrosion with a foaming action, works great, gets deep down into the areas you can't reach with a terminal cleaner brush. Then take some terminal grease to prevent the build up again.

Our radios dont have an anti-theft devise where it will lock up if you disconnect the battery right?

If that was the case, FORD would have a TSB out to change it because of all the complaints. Fords radios aren't that good.

Nope, but you will lose the presets and the tranny/engine will have to "re-learn" your driving habits.

Pay attention to your gauges when you start the truck. If they swept all they way across and then settle down to normal, that's usually a sign that your battery is on the way out.

I had a start up problem I though about posting it but I choise to figure it out myself. Sometimes I would try to start it stone cold and it would catch but then die right away. Usually it would take a second or third try to get it started, but one day it was rediculous. It seriously took like 6 tries before I got the idea that I should put my foot on the gas and that got it started. I baught some TB cleaner and fuel injector cleaner same day and the problem has not come back. Now while it was having these problems starting, the gauges would sweep all the way over and then come back after a second or so. Now it just seems like it takes the tach (not sure about the rest of the gauges) to move on startup. Wander if the battery is on its way out?

Go down to autozone and have the charging system tested, don't want to get stranded when you can prevent it. FYI, having to give it some gas before the truck will start and stay running is usually an IAC valve problem, the TB cleaner might have clean it for now, but keep an eye on that too.

I do have one question about this. When the engine/tranny are relearning how I drive will it mess with shift points? I honestly hope so, OD anoys me to death. When I am at 35-40mph cruising as long as my foot is on the gas peddle engine rpm is probably like 1750, but if i let off for a second and coast engine rpm will drop to 900rpm and then as soon as I put my foot back on the gas it shoots back up to 1750rpm and you can just barely feel it shift. Is this normal?

That's your torque converter locking in and out....its normal at that speed. When it doesn't downshift you should be curious, usually means overdrive is going south.
