Hey. Broke a bolt today, never had one get stuck before. I must be lucky. I JB welded it, letting it set up tonight. If it doesn't want to turn loose tomorrow, what is the best way to remove? Any old tricks? Thanks Blair
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Sep-02 AT 09:02 PM (EST)]it depends on where it is, 1. you can try drilling it out and put an easy out in it, but you have to be careful not to break the easy out. 2, you can weld a nut on to the broken bolt if there is enough sticking out and then put a scocket on it and turn it out. the welding is the best method. :-staun
FORDS WILL BE RUNNING LONG AFTER THE GM JUNK IS ON THE SCRAP HEAP
from a professional point of view, take it to a machine shop, and get them to remove it... i've seen alot of things ruined by ppl trying to remove broken bolts... it might cost you a couple bucks, but better then spending all day, only to ruin a part... and when someone comes in with a bolt that's been drilled, welded, or had someone else "at it" we tell them that the person who started it can finish it...
now if yu do do it, drill as straight as possiable, and as close to center as you can. the drive in easyouts work better then the left-hand twist in ones... if you weld on the bolt, be carefull to not weld it to what it's stuck in, try to get it nice and warm, then let it cool ( a couple squirts of wd-40 while cooling helps). another thing is that somtimes if you weld on it, it will go hard and you won't be able to drill it, if so requird.
dont' expect you jb weld to hold, if the bolt broke, jb isn't going to be any stronger then the parent metal, actually probably alot weaker, and it may leave some behind, making it almost impossable to weld on....
I had a nasty bolt. A truck wide mud flap was behind rear wheels. I put a 9/16 wrench on bottom, wedge it against frame, and put socket on top. Found a 3 ft piece of steel pipe to put on the socket. Ended up splitting the socket, thank got for craftsmans warranty.
No revelence to topic just a small anecdote to share.
