first paint ?'s

My dad was a bodyman/painter and passed away 12 years ago. I still have a lot of his tools.

I'm going to paint my first car in a week or two. Total field bomber-think dirt oval track.

I remember enough about the techniques needed but have no idea what kind of paint, primer, and air pressure to use. Or how to reduce the different kinds of paint, or how much to reduce it. I want a paint that will go on easy and cover as much as possible. Somebody mentioned "machinery enamel", said it was real cheap and easy. Again I don't care if this paint fades in 6 months etc. So if you folks have any tips on the cheapest easiest paint for a rookie please let me know. By the way the gun is a Sharpe HVLP. And I have a newer 60 gallon compressor, with a good water trap and regulator. Thanks everyone.

Here's what I did & used. We had a dirt car, Pure Stock-turned to Street Stock. I painted the entire car with Rustoleum using one of those cheap Harbor Frieght spray guns. Don't even bother trying to figure out the technique of the HVLP guns unless you're just wanting to try it for practice. With the cheapie guns, you can even spray POR-15 or similar "heavy paint" products without reducing them.

Since we knew that they were gonna beat our car to death every week, I'd just re-spray the wrecked areas every week. It blended in well and looked great from the distance of the stands and wasn't too bad up close. We had a black car with two white stripes running down the middle of the entire car. I found out that the best paint for the white stripes (since they didn't get the .... beat out of them) was that appliance paint you get in the puff cans. That stuff holds up great.

Bottom line, just go for it - it all looks good from the stands and anything looks good in that Winners Circle Photo.

get a macco paint job save you the time an the money. if your just wanting to learn then all you got to do is sctotch brite the car so the paint has somthing to bite to. tape every thing off then degress that car then tack it off. use a single stage paint were you mix the clear in the paint bc youll end up running the clear to the ground paint easy to lay flat and not run but clear is a different story. talk to a rep from a paint store they tell you how much to reduce and things like that different paint usese different amounts or reducer. cheap paint is matrix but it sucks um i would use utec single stage paint its made by skikens.

For what yo want to do....RUSTOLEUM oil based enamel will work great. I use MEK to reduce it about 75 to 100%...run it thru a paint strainer when you pour it in the gun and wear a good respirator...then have at it!... about 40-50 # air press .......you wont believe how great it looks..even close up.....the sun gets to it after a year or so outside..but its pretty cheap.

Autozone has white/red and black auto enamel for about $40 a gallon...might try that if you want to spend more...

Maybe sherwin-williams industrial enamel? You can get pretty much any color. It's about $25/gal for white, maybe a little more for colors. The red oxide primer is good too.

Someone mentioned single stage paint. I just did my truck in that with a conventional gun, 40-50# psi, about 100 bucks for 2 1/2 qts, hardener and reducer. They said it was prolly the cheapest way to go, using an air gun. Last paint job I did on the truck was with a brush and roller....20 bucks, haha. HVLP I think I saw on the sheet PPG gave me you want to run it about 7-10 psi....can anyone verify that? Im pretty sure thats what I saw, dont have it right in front of me right now. For mixing, it's usually on the can. For me it was 4 parts paint, 1 part reducer, 1 part hardner.

At my local NAPA you can get a Nason (dupont) paint kit for about $150, includes 1 gal single stage, hardner and reducer.

if you learning how to paint single stage is the way to go. Trying to spray clear is about the hardest damn thing i have ever done lol well not that hard but its a bitch. I still run it at times. so i spray the paint then i have a shop i use to work at spray the clear if its a compleat. little things i can clear its just a compleat i have a hard time with. you never want to run a gun at the low of a psi 40-50 psi with a 1.4-1.6mm tip will usually work.
