Clanking while shifting!

Clanking while shifting!
Ok...ive got this eary clanking sound when i shift: all gears. Its louder when i downshift. I took the PTO plate off the 205 and there was very little slop, so i put the plate back on and jack the rearend up. Spun one tire and quickly spun it the other way and it made the clanking sound(not as loud while driving). I do not have time to even look at the rear end and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the problem? Im thinking maybe the spider gears worn? Ive heard of backlash?! Anyone???? Thanks!
