Since the 78-79 Broncos have "basically" the front end of our trucks, why couldn't you just torch off the frame behind the tranny mounts of a late-70's 4x4 Bronco and weld it onto the front of a 2x4 70's pickup? You would still need the transfer case et al, but you see what I mean...
I'm pleading ignorance here on the the details of this conversion as I have only poked around under a late 70's Bronco a coupla times, but from the looks of it (to me at least) it could be done...
It can be done, but you'd be better off trying to fix the Bronco, or buy a 4wd.
IF you want to go through all the trouble of adjusting the frames to the perfect position for correct allinmante and everything after you cut both the frames go for it, because the front of the 78 79 Broncos is the exact same as the front of a 73-79 F-series.
You would need the tranny, t case, and front drive shafts from the Bronco, and still have to find a rear drive shaft, and alot of fabracating.
I'm sure you COULD do all that but it's way more work than you need to make a 2wd truck a 4x4, especially if you've got a donor Bronco. Radius arm brackets and a few other details and you could have it without all the frame slice and splice.
I'm not one to tell people "don't do the conversion, just buy a 4x4" as I think the conversion is relatively easy. I just don't think the method you described is easy and I think it leaves a lot to go wrong.
