Hey guys hows it going, I bought an 1989 F-350 7.3L diesel c6 auto with 4.11s,
i was just wondering what my rpms will be at 65, ive heard 2800rpms and am sure thats what it will be but wanna hear what u guys are saying i havent taken it on the highway yet. Ive also heard at the governer is 72-75. Also What are you guys with similar trucks getting for mpg off highway and on highway. I know it will be somewhere between 17-22mpg offhighway from what ive heard.
What are you guys getting on highway 11-14?
Thanks for any help Jmac
With 31" tires (235/85-16) you will be turning 2900 at 65 MPH.
I would expect about 9 or 10 MPG at that speed.
Mine is a 7.3 turbo 4x4 4 speed 3.55's and 33" tires(285/75-16) and my average for the year so far is 10.8 MPG. I drive a lot of interstate miles at 70 MPH and tow and haul a lot of weight often.
2550 RPM is 70 MPH for me.
The trucks with overdrive trannies are the only ones getting much more than 12 MPG.
The only other option is to drive like you are 85 years old, slow starts and very slow speeds down the road.
About 1900 RPM with a very light throttle foot is best for MPG which will be 42 MPH in your truck.
have a 94 F250 4x4 super cab long bed with a IDI TD, E40D, 4.10 gears 235/85/16 tires at 80psi. The truck had 122k miles at the start of the trip and a bit over 123k at the end. I drove it back from FL and tested the mileage. Here is what I got...the truck was basically empty...one motorcycle in the bed and pulling a jet ski on a trailer.
Cruise Control set at 70mph (about 2250rpm) --> 13mpg
Cruise Control set at 60mph (about 2000rpm) --> 16.5mpg
Cruise Control set at 55mph (about 1800rpm) --> 21.3mpg
Mine has the 4 speed and 4.10's as well, and the best I have ever seen is 15, running by itself no cargo or trailer. Pulling trailer it can be down to 10-12 depending on weight. It will still go down the road holding 55 with 13000 on the trailer no problem. Top speed is about 75, that is really cranking on it. I try not to do that, I would like to keep this truck for quite a while. I just made a 2 hour haul with a total scale weight of 20,000 and it would run 55 - 60 on average, only a few times did it pull down to 45, and that was due to no run for the hill. I also don't stomp down and make it smoke, I tend to back it down to reduce smoke, and it still keeps pulling unless I back down too far. I only let off enough to stop or lessen the smoke. It ran 10 mpg on that run. I don't do that often, but it is the reason that I got the truck, to be able to as I need.

My diesel pulls about 12 mpg on a really good day. I'm not terribly keen on how they work, but say for example i added a good turbo kit to my truck -is there any way to "de-tune" the injectors and allow for better mpgs? I don't do much heavy haulin, when i do I take it slow anyhow, but this is my daily driver and would like a little less of my hard earned cash to get dumped into my fuel tank. Thanks
Scott
