Hitting neutral at 55!

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the tips on the site. They have really helped me on my bronco. But I've got a new problem today. For the past couple weeks while im driving to work, I will be cruising along at 55 and all of a sudden it will hit neutral for about 1 second then catch back into gear. It does it maybe once or twice on my 30 minute drive to work. One day it hit neutral for about 4 seconds 2 seperate times and it is starting to worry me. I haven't had a chance to even look at it yet. I figured I would post on here first to see if anyone has had this problem before and how they fixed it. I will look at it this next weekend hopefully and see whats going on. I have a stock 94 bronco with a 351. Hopefully it is not anything major but I think I will start saving some money just in case. Thanks.
Brad

Sounds like your transmission is slipping. Try some Lucas transmission stuff till you can re-build.

There would be a few things to check. On the E4od tranny there is a MPLS(Manual position lever sensor) the early E4od had issues with this sensor getting wet and the computer would tell the reans to go into limp mode. I had something like you describe here and it turned out the TPS (throttle position sensor). Even though it tested fine when I replaced it the issue went away.

Sideout2 is right. It is "limp mode" and is caused by faulty shift position lever sensor. The OD light on shifter will flash and it will hold gears for a long time before shifting also.
My 95 Bronco with E4OD did this on regular basis when we were in Seattle (wet).
We moved to drier climate and it hasn't done it in 1.5 years.
I believe this piece takes a special tool to align correctly after you replace it. It may be something to let a competent shop do.

You can replace the MPLS with an updated part from Ford. There is a TSB on this, can't find it right now. It is pretty straight forward. You have to repin the connector with the unit from Ford. It dose not require a special tool, the instructions are pretty good. Hope all goes well.

Mine in my 94 did the same thing about two yrs.ago I replaced the MPLS sensor with the Ford updated one, it's not hard to repin the connector. I haven't had any problems since.
