this is my first post on this sight, but have been on Mustang forum quite a bit. I purchased a F350 1 ton dump the other day and the cab is really rusty. But got another cab (plus one fender and a hood) along with the deal and they are in goood shape. How much trble is it to just replace the cab and leave the front clip in tact with exception of bad fender and hood? Has anyone done this before? Thnx in advance.
The job is not particurlary difficult (depending on your skill and confidence level)...and I have never known anybody to do a cab swap with out stripping the front sheet metal off first...if you look thru the threads there are several well documented cab swap stories...good and bad. Good luck with the project. One word of advice - tag and bag the parts you remove and take plenty of pictures of how stuff was mounted and came apart. This advice is based soley on hindsight and not forsight.....I have a tendency to get antsy and in too big of a hurry to get the project done....reassenbly takes much longer to accomplish if you rely on memory (and my memory has always been questionable)....
Yep do what boomer202 said. I didn't and I "think" everything is back together correctly.
I did my cab swap on an 83 and had to take the hood & front fenders off. With the 67-72 you would have to take the fenders, inner fenders and hood off as they are all attached to the the cab in one way or another. your best bat is to also pull the wiring harness and move it to the new cab as the donor may have some differant wiring in it. I was hoping to not do this but ended up swaping everything over except for the dash frame( I even had to swap out front and rear windows due to brakage).
You guys are probably right. The "bad" cab has a lot of wiring issues. It has aftermarket turn signal on tree, they don't work. has extra fuse holder array on inner firewall for backup lites, little fan for driver, cab lights, etc. The new cab is virtually unmolested and it was a 3 on tree. The 360 eng has what appears to be electronic ign, something that wasn't available in 71. Not to mention a tach, oil and water add on gauges and a little bulb on dash that I think is alternator lite(comes on with key in on pos and off after truck starts). This is going to be a nightmare for me.
I did a cab swap on a 60 F-250 2wd with the front-end still on. I unbolted the cab and the radiator coresupport and left the fenders on it. I unplugged the wiring and took all the under hood wiring and layed it on the engine. Then lifted the cab and front end up and off. Set the donor cab and front end on the old frame thesame way. Then pluged the under hood wiring into the donor cab harness. It is a heavier way of doing it than seperating the cab and front end. I did my 66 4wd by doing the cab and front end seperate, both ways it's alot of work.
