i'm leaning more in the direction of something wrong with either the gearbox or the differential. More towards the gearbox. Maybe soemthing clutch related because of it happening only after a gear change. The reason being that if it was something wrong wit the engine, then you'd hear the noise in neutral as well. Does this happen only at a certain rpm or does that not make a difference?

Actually, I listened more carefully and I think I hear it in neutral now at idle but very faintly and not from the engine area but along the side where the exhaust is. Probably an exhaust leak I havent found yet.
