I am missing the breather cap on the left hand side of my 400 cid. All that is there is a threaded piece of metal sticking up, will any breather cap work there.
Also on the left hand side(oil fill) do I need to get the type with a hose that connects to the carb or can a get one that is the same as the left.

Here are two different versions I've seen of the Ford pcv system. Make sure you always use the proper PCV valve in the system. This is an emissions deal that is a win-win situation. It keeps nasty fumes from out of the engine compartment and the environment, and it keeps your oil and engine cleaner inside, making it last much longer.
