Axle Help!!!!!!

hi all. i have a supposedly 66 f 250 4x4 frame and drivetrain shortened under a 57 250 and i can't figure out a noise in the rear. its only noticeable during driving at 30-35 mph or more and mostly when maintaining speed, goes away when under acceleration or full let off when the engine is applying pressure to the rear. tore diff down, no odd wear, no filings. pitched rear end to align driveshaft, didn't help either. just bad rear, bearing somewhere bad, universals, or what??? hate to start throwing money at the beast that could be used for other things. rear has a 10 bolt pattern on driveshaft side with 5-6 (forget which) bolts holding input shaft never seen one before, what is it anyway?

How did the U joints look? That's a cheap and easy replacement... I've seen stranger things.

traced it to a ford 9 inch so i know i can get parts, gonna try new u joints even though they look ok since thats a cheap part and i don't know how old they are anyway, then its probably time to take it to a shop i can use on weekends and get er up and torn completely down, replace all guts or swap in a new rear, hate the sound of that thing, and i shouldn't be embarressed in this truck!!!

Sounds like a u-joint. But if it's a 9", it should be a F-100 frame? Does it have 5 lug wheels or 8?

I was not aware of any F250's that use the 9" rear, either. It is likely a F100/F150 frame and axle. The wheel bolt count should ID 1/2 or 3/4 ton.

yeah i researched chassis and cab its a 57 f100 on a 66 f100 4x4 frame dana 44 front ford 9 inch rear dana 24 transfer case unmarried 352 4 speed. hell it might not even be a 352 have to check stroke on that yet. anyway mechanic friend told me replace u joints and wheel bearings before i think about rebuiding rear, so that is next weekends project, working on road now mon-thurs which'll cut into house and truck work, but will keep me from going crazy about either lol

Beastmaster- did you ever figure out your rear-end noise? I have a '63 F100 w/ 6cyl , 3 spd man. with Ford 9" rear end. 3.89 ratio. I have a noise like you describe. Anything above about 45 mph, makes a horrible, loud noise that seems to come from the rear end. Anything that you or anyone can share would be greatly appreciated

Uh, if it's loud and horrible, I would stop driving it until you find the cause, you're just gonna cause more damage. What kind of noise? Clunk, whine, hum? Jack it up and check the U-joints. Turn the drive shaft and each wheel back and forth - see if it's doing anything odd or making any noticble noises. Off hand, my guess is the bearings are going.

I guess I would describe it as a whine or a "gear" noise. I just replaced the U-joints & replaced some bearings in the transmission. Now it is obvious that the noise is coming from the rear end. There seems to be a lot of play when I turn the drive shaft by hand. After looking at a manual I am probably looking at a rear end rebuild which I am neither equipt or qualified to attempt. Any other suggestions or possibilities?

Slack in the driveline and whine from the back end usualy bean a pinion or carrier bearing has let go. The good news is you have a 9 inch. the gears and pinion all sit in whats is called the "Third member" while setting up gears in a rear end is something that requires a lot of skill, changing out the whole Third member is about as easy as it gets. By changing out the whole thing for one that works, you avoid the hassle and expense of setting up the gears.

A Third member from a junkyard in good shape shouldn't run more than a couple hundred, and if you buy the whole axle and take it out your self, it should be even cheaper. (i've seen $25 bucks)
They aren't even year specific. there are only 2 styles. big bearing, and small bearing. Pick the size you need (should be small bearing from a 66 f100) and then pick a gear ratio you hope to have.
