its a v-8, not sure if 302 or 351; originally had a 302 w/ a 4 speed. but now it has a 3 speed and i believe it is a 351 because the valve cover gap is that of a 351. it should have the stock gears, but not sure, i plan on lifting it 4 or 6 inches, that is why i want to find out how much better mpg i can get b4 lifting it.
Honestly, the first thing I would do is upgrade to a four barrel carb and different manifold. Your two barrel has to work harder suppling fuel when you step on the gas constantly in the city. The fact that your trans is lower gears also doesnt help with that. If you go to a four barrel, beleive it or not it will be more efficient, providing you dont stomp on the gas all the time. The air flow and fuel is dispersed more evenly than if you use the two barrel. It is a common miscomception that four barrels are inefficient. They are only gas guzzlers when you stomp on the gas. It opens all the barrels and dumps more fuel. There is a primary section and secondary. It only lets enough to run through efficiently until you stomp the gas and then the secondary opens. Of course your standard issue with engine breathability comes in to play also, air cleaner, exhaust, etc.... Hotter spark, better breathing, and higher gears, is the basic formula. Tire size will greatly affect this too.
I can get 12 in city and up to 18 on highway with a 95. For your 80, aside from a carb upgrade that was already mentioned, I'd check the gearing and/or look for a 4 or 5 speed tranny. Advancing the timing a couple of extra degrees can help, too, but you need to watch out for pinging.
