Just logged on to wix filters and compared the cfm of stock filter #46648 for 99 f350 to 6637 and it don't add up
Stock filter is 640 cfm
6637 filter is 425cfm
So how do you figure it gets more air through it. I have the 6637 on mine haven't really put it through the pases yet to see how much better it is but just short up hill around home the turbo sure seemed to like it.
i don't know what those numbers are, or where they came from... but i can tell you... there is NO WAY... NO WAY IN HELL.. that the 6637 flows LESS air than the stock filter...! NO WAY AT ALL..! oh... did i mention that there is NO WAY...!
That is an interesting observation lonepine. Might just be a typo. I'll bet it's supposed to be 240 cfm, since the wix 3" pleat high capacity stock filter is rated at 260 cfm. But remember filter media is as important as surface area. The actual dimensions of the intake area of the AIS filter is a fair bit smaller than the stock filter, but they the media is like a 6" pleat so the actual filtering surface area is way more. Dale at Tymar has cautioned that the Tymar copycat filters are not as good filter media as his filter. Maybe he is right.
I installed the 6637 filter on my truck a few weeks ago. You can hear more air noise which is to be expected going from a box to an open filter. Last night I pulled an 11,000 lb. load for 150 miles and you could tell that it made quite a difference in EGT's and turbo stall was less. So I am happy with the change,$35 well spent. I just wish I could stick out through the fender for some FRESH air!
From what I can gather from the professional test results cited, the best thing I could do for my Powerstroke is to use the filter with the largest area and the most restrictive media. That way, I'd have plenty of better-filtered air.
But I already knew that. I know the 6637 fulfills one of these parameters.
You know after looking through the WIX site some more they may have made a typo or something. Because the upgrade fore the Dodge air filter part # 42790 the dimensions are :
Height 11.88
outer diameter 10.5
inner diameter 4
cfm rated at 680
And the 46637s specs are:
height 12.38
outer diameter 8.5
inner diameter 4
cfm 425
Specs for stock # 46648 are
height 2.295
length 13.351
width 7.229
cfm 640
So maybe the one they recommend for dodge would be better it is 2" larger in diameter and 1/2 inch shorter but 255 cfm more.
Ill have to take a look but believe it will still fit in same place. Not saying that the 6637 doesn't work better just that the specs say it shouldn't and that maybe the option that they say is fore the dodge might be even better. On the down side it does cost about $10 more.
