I am planning on replacing the front brakes this weekend. I have not personally examined them yet, but a local tire shop said they look okay and have about 20 percent life left. I don't believe them because of the noise they are making, which in the past has been indicative of worn out pads. This vehicle has 163k on it and I've had the brakes done many times over the years, so I pretty much know that sound.
Assuming that the rotors look okay (no serious scoring or discoloration), I was thinking about just purchasing loaded calipers and not even turning the rotors (again.. if they appear to look acceptable).
A couple of questions.... any thoughts on the different pad materials that are available? Regular versus premium versus ceramic?
I also see that the calipers have either phenolic pistons or metalic pistons. What are advantages and disadvantages there?
Thanks for the information and opinions.

I agree, I wouldn't replace the calipers unless there is a problem. If it's pulling, or one side is worn much worse than the other, then it could be either a caliper or brake hose.
