Recently my E150 351 with 125,000 seemed to vapor lock a few times. It has been VERY hot here 90°+ the 2 times it's done it. Both times it happens at idle, or coasting. ig upto a red light or in traffic with foot off the gas.
The time it happened in the parking lot I jumped out to vent the gas cap, but no HISSSSSS.
If we seat for 10 min. or so no more problems.
Is it vapor lock? A bad filter? A bad pump?
ALSO I think this is imporent; for the past few months when sitting with the van idling for a period of time you get a gas smell. Sometimes faint sometimes very strong, it doesn't stall or seem to lose power. But I think the two might be related.
If your E150 is a 1987 thru 1991, With dual fuel tanks the problem is the fuel tank selector valve. It is mounted just forward of the front fuel tank. There are several messages in this forum about this problem... do a search.
Found the IAC. Going to remove it and clean it, wish this problem happenec more often so I'd know if it fixed the problem.
Thanks for all the help
Vapor Lock is:
When gasoline overheats and boils inside the carburetor bowl or fuel pump of a hot engine, it ceases to flow. This can cause stalling or hard starting. This is called vapor lock, and it usually happens during hot weather. If a hot engine won't start, all you can do is let it sit and cool off.
As mentioned earlier, a fuel injected engine won't do this. But a blocked vent line to/from the gas tank could. A bad filter or pump might also.

So, what is an "IAC" anyway? The other day,my 94,4.9 wouldn't start (engine hot-3/4 full of gas,2yr old feul pump, brand new feul filter). I checked, and wasn't getting any pressure to the engine. It sat for 1 1/2 hrs. I also unplugged the wires to the feul pump, then plugged it back in. After that, it started right up!!! I thought of vapor lock, but someone said feul injection doesn't do that!!! What do ya think it was?
There's also a rubber hose that connects the metal gas input tube to the gas tank. Mine had degraded. I was having a gas smell every time I filled my tank or parked on an incline. Finally one day when I was pouring a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank, I noticed the fuel dripping out on my shoe. Had to drop the tank to replace. Not a fun job after you just filled the tank!
