engines?

Hey everyone. New member though a long time Ford fan.... There is a 1976 f250 for sale in my neighborhood and the owner says it has a 351 engine though he is not sure which type. In 76 was the 351 stock or has this possibly been transplanted and not the original engine. Also curiuos to know how to tell if it is a cleveland, windsor, or a motified? Is there a way to decipher? I currently own a 76 f250 and was looking for a secondary parts truck.

Welcome to FTE! The 335 Series (351M/400) didn't make their appearance in the trucks until the 1977 model year. It's possible that the truck is a 1977 which would make for a probable 351M in the truck. The 351C was not used in the F-Series trucks. As far as engine identification, Torque1st put together the list below. Hope this helps.

__________________________________________________ ______________

The 351W and 351C did not come stock in 73-9 trucks. Some of them have been "transplanted" tho.

Engine Identification:
=================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.

351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.

351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.

429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover

352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.

There are other indicators but these may help.

More than Likely an M motor.

The jury is still out on what the M means so please just type 351M.

and

351Cleveos were put in up to about 1973 Cars..../ Not trucks

Actually they were used till 74 in north america, and until 84 in australia.

Also in 76 it could have also been a 360 as well as a 390

360 was used in the 4x4 f-250's and in the f 100 and f150 the 250 and 350 2wd used the 390.

Yeah, no 351C in a truck from Ford. They were used as an M, Q, or H code Cleveland in midsize cars up to 1974, which was the last year for the Cleveland.
Use the valve cover bolt count as a guide in deciding which engine. 8 bolts in the valve cover could be a 351C, 351M, or 400. The width of intake manifold on a 351C is about 11 inches, and 351M/400 about 12 inches. To tell between 351M and 400 would be a tough thing to prove, without a displacement test using oil in a cylinder and a graduated clear hose or container; Multiply by 8! lol
It does sound like a transplant to me. I have hear of more 351W transplants than 351C, as the Windsors are much easier to find.

I bought a truck believed to have a 390. I found who built it, and was told it is was a 391FT engine which was bored to 428 CJ size (4.13) and had a CJ crank in it, so I got a 428 CJ out of the deal! It was a 1974 F100. Fresh off the farm! lol Only 391FT blocks should be bored that big. (they were service replacement blocks for the 428, especially after 1972 or so.)
Many mix and match parts for the FE. I hope you can nail it down! The crank casting code should help. If you have a CJ crank (code 1U) you would have a 410 cubic incher (like Mercury) with the standard 360/390 bore.

not to burst your bubble but its not a 428 cj. the cj had their own special block which made them a cj. they just used 428 parts in a ft block which was a industrial use engine in medium to heavy trucks.

Then why is all the info I find pointing to the fact that when the factory ran out of 428 CJ engines as replacements, they began to use bored-out 391 FT's? (thicker cast)
I have a few sources for this info... But basically the bore is made 428-size, then all the other parts went into it and dropped into the customer's car...

the factory never made a 428 out of a ft block it never happened. you can bore most of them to 428 size and make a 428. http://www.428cobrajet.com/id-block.html
