i cant get my front shocks off of my 80 f250. the nut that is at the top of the stud seems to be stuck and when i try to turn it the top half of the shock turns with it. i have front leave springs if this helps, and it is a dana 44, i think.
You have two options that i know work. You can use a air ratchet and spin it off fast enough so that the shock doesn't turn with it. You can also use a pair of visegrips on the shaft of the shock and hold it while loosening the nut. This should work. A little lube helps too, or a torch to melt some of the rust. good luck
Yeah penetrating oil and visegrips are safer, but sometimes the ol' torch is needed. I needed it to remove the ball joints on my truck when everything else failed, even a press. I just blew a hole threw the middle of them and they came out. If your shock nuts are that rusted maybe you should replace them or if they some out still in good shape you should clean them up. have fun
everything on my truck is rusted, it sure has seem a snow belt sometime in its life, the rust is so bad my left rear shock mount rusted itself through, and its close to a quarter inch thick.
Sounds familiar, try living in Ohio, lol. I had a leafspring nearly fall off the hangers were so rusted out. If I don't plan on reusing stuff, it just gets cut off. Good luck with it, torchworks well when dealin with rusty stuff, I use it tons.
