I have a 70 F100 with a 302 and 3 speed automatic transmission. I am smog exempt, so I want to remove all the smog stuff to free up some horsepower. What do I need to remove and does anyone have any diagrams or suggestions to help?
Tough call here, Nick. We really shouldn't be giving you advice on how to remove smog equipment, even if your vehicle is old enough to be smog exempt. I'd keep everything in place if it's all working correctly, and look to other upgrades to increase performance. Or, if the budget should allow, swap in a late model EFI 5.0 or 351W which burns cleaner and makes more power besides.
Not a lot of smog equipment to remove on a 70 model unless it has an air pump. If it has an air pump then cut the belt and it's removed. Same with the egr valve. Stick a bb in the vacumn line and it's removed.

Wondering why we shouldn't hep in removing smog if legal. Is it an ethical issue or legal issue for the site?
I have a '83 bronco that I just bought for my son and the smog is all broken. And was looking to take it off and at least fix the massive vacuum leak.
Just wondering.

As I understand the smog law in California, "Smog Exempt" merely means exempt from testing. Your vehicle is still required to have all the smog equipment on it that it originally came with.
So, even though the vehicle isn't required to be tested anymore, it's still not legal to remove the smog equipment. You're just on the Honor System with a 30+ year-old vehicle, instead of having to have it tested.
So yes, it becomes a legal issue for the site. I will do some more research into this issue, however. The Ca. DMV site is somewhat ambiguous about the issue, and I haven't had the time to do too much checking elsewhere. However, one piece of info I came across suggested that it may actually be a violation of Federal law to disable smog equipment, even if the vehicle is that old.
Hopefully, someone with more knowledge of the laws pertaining to smog than I have will chime in.
I'm in Montana- we can't even spell smog more than 50% of the time. No laws regarding emission that I'm aware of. Not sure that matters- Can't see any legal problems unless the site itself advocates and provides info but the exchange of ideas should be way different... but may be some ethical delimma in some circumstances. I'll figure it out either way- concerning my rig.
Another reason that removing smog equipment can be touchy is it can introduce a lot of other problems...particularly spark knock when removing EGR. But in this case, I'm not really sure of any smog equipment that would be on a '70. Unless you consider a PCV valve smog equipment, but you want to keep that. If I recall correctly, I don't think EGR came about until 72 or so, and air pumps until later in the 70's.
Nick should be fine with his '70. Boy am I in the middle of it with the '83 windsor. I will eventually need to build a pre smog motor for it. I have a tough time with the smog and electronics- give me points or give me a mental breakdown. So help would be appreciated.
