Has anyone installed a simple key lock on to the fuel flap? Locking gas caps seem not to be available for all make vehicles, and some tend to be associated with check engine lights.
I think you'll find that Ford supplies the proper locking caps without a problem. At least around here, I would be hesitant to drill into the flap because it would likely start a rust problem.
Ford P/n FC-971 and P/n XU5Z-9030-FA Labeled "Fuel Cap" Look up Ford accessories on the net. Keep your old non-locking one, they won't pollution pass the locking cap even though there is nothing wrong with it here.
Locking gas cap doors just get bent open with a screw driver or big bar and result in a lot of damage to the truck. A locking gas cap will usually be by passed by a normal thief with a screw driver, hammer, and can.
It's not the theives I worry about, it's the Enviro terrorist that pour stuff in your gas tank and destroy the engine. They are real sneaky and don't want to call attention to themselves, other than reports in the news. Seem to strike shopping malls esp. when it's raining.
I'm looking at the locking gas caps on fordaccessories.com and not seeing a cap for my Ranger. Would one of the other "vehicle specific" caps fit? I can't imagine Ford using a different sized gas cap for each individual vehicle...
What year Ranger? and I assume its not Diesel. I'm showing P/n XU5Z-9030HA for a 2001 Ranger @ $33.00 plus any shipping charges. I loaned my F150 locking cap to a lady at work for her small Ford Car, and it fit. To keep her whacked out Ex. from sabatoging her car.

The made changes to the fuel system in 2004, so be careful what you order. I'm not showing a fuel cap for a 2005 Ranger. Tip cross reference the non-locking one number to a newer vehicle such as the Escape, Ford 500, Montero, Freestyle, 2005 Mustang, etc.
I'll tell you what I used to have a 89 Mazda 2600i that came from the factory with a lock in the fuel door, which used the ignition key. It worked a heck of alot better than I have now, wish I had it on my new Mazda.
