best sounding muffler?
best sounding muffler?
Hey guys, in your opinion, what is the best sounding muffler, am running a 351w in a 96 f-150, going catless, have duel out the back with 3 1/2 inch tips, and am curious to what sounds the best in your guys opinion, priced reasonably of course...lol after all firemen dont make much....... am thinking about going with a magnaflow race series.. had one on a different truck and it sounded pretty good. all opinions are welcome, cuz i cant decided....lol laterz here is a pic of the truck in mention, this was before the windows were tinted , wind visors and so on...

not just god awfull loud, cuz my boy 2 1/2 years old rides with me all the time.. but somthing that sounds good, it sounds good now, just want it a bit louder, am running strait pipe with the factory cats on it.
I can say, that I wouldn't do a thing until after you pull the cat(s)... I had a Corvette that almost became unbearable with the Borla exhaust after I gutted the cat out. BIG DIFFERENCE. I kinda wished that I kept the cat intact to be honest. It was loud outside, and the interior was loud with a lot of resonance.
update, today took it down to a local shop that does pretty good work, he cut the rear cat off, and put the o2 sensor that was behind the second cat back in, (with out the second cat, and without an o2 elimenator, its still not throwing codes) but he put a 29 inch i believe,2 1/2 inch red hot under there, and its still not much louder then it was with both cats and strait pipe, so guess my only other cheep option is to cut my other cat off right? sounds a little better but still not what i am looking for.
I used to have a 12" glasspack with the rear cat removed too. Sounded nice and loud, but no overly loud. I took off the other cat and it got louder

well, will wait till next week sometime to remove the front cat, am still suprised though, that removing the second cat and putting the o2 sendor back in didnt throw any codes... figured for sure was gonna have to use the o2 eleminator i had bought...lol
update again, removed the front cat, still about as loud as it was with just the rear cat gone ... so basicly now the set up is no cats, 29 inch glasspack, 2.25 duels out the back with 3.50 inch tips, so other then headers and shorting the glasspack, what about cutting the pipes to just infront of or just behind the rear axle? that might liven it up a little maybe? that or how much of a difference does a 29 inch glasspack and an 18 inch glasspack make? if it will make a drastic improvment on sound then 18 will me on it monday....lol thanks for any more info you guys can share on this topic.

There's an old trick to gettin those glasspacks to rap really nicely. Run 2" or 2.25" into it, and then neck it down to the next size down on the other end. Works wonders for the attitude of the sound.
did that already i believe, its 3 inch coming from where the cats were to the glasspack, the glasspack is 2.50 inch and the the duels coming out the back are 2.25 inch. Thanks for the tip though, i didnt know that would make a difference.
Longer packs are quieter....I would just get that exhaust guy to run a true dual setup with dual packs 2.5 " pipe all the way back. I bet that would be louder especially if you add a crossover H pipe into it, it wont be too loud and it will be nice.
My muffler shop hollowed out the front catalytic converter, removed the rear converter, and ran 3" pipe the whole way to the back--and it rumbles, maybe like what you are looking for. For me, at my age, it's almost a bit too loud....but my 25 year old son likes it, and thinks there's hope for me yet!
