Gear Ratio

does n e one know what the stock gear ratio is on 97 2wd 2.3l 5sp Rangers, when I bought my truck the guy had some pretty big tires on it and a lift so the gear ratio is all messed up now. Also when I go about 90 the spedometer says 75, my acceleration sucks too, all because I need to change the ring or pinion in the diff. I heard its a pretty costly matter replacing those parts so if anyone knows how much shops charge for it or is it better doing it yourself

my guess would be 3.73's

My guess would be 3.73's(because my '99 low budget ranger has them). Look in the info sticker on the driver's side door- you will find an axle code and stock tire size.

It sounds like you have tires that are about 20% taller than stock. I gotta believe that would cause quite a bit of power loss, as well as a loss of mileage. Going from 3.73's to 4.10's(next step up) only gives you a 10% ratio reduction.
If you have 3.73's now, and want to get back to proper final gear ratios with the big tires, you'll need about 4.47's.

I know you can get 4.56's on Rangers, and assume they'd fit in your truck, but you may want to look into it if you like your big tires. It may be cheaper than you think...

The only other option is to fix your power/mileage problem is smaller tires...

good luck, Jim

thx man, i checked out the sticker and it is 3.73,
the thing is I love big tires and i think il get some really big snow/mud tires for the winter, so tire size is not a matter of compromise, i dont wana look like a gangbanger with tiny tires specially in chicago its not a 'cool' thing, and since i got a 4" lift smaller tires would add even more to the goofiness factor.
Right now I'm just looking for the parts since I know what size I need and everything, du u guys have any preferences to where should I look for and do I have to replace both the pinion and the ring? thx again u guys r helping me out a lot

I don't recall if you said it was a 4x4 or not.
If you regear you will have to do both axles at about 2-4 hundred / axle just for labor. Parts will run anywhere from 50$ (used, ebay, etc.. ) to a couple hundred / axle for the ring And pinion & associated parts.
It is not something a shadetree mechanic should do either.
I rebuilt an old Jeep from the ground up but sent the axles out to a reputable local shop because I didn't want them messed up (by me LOL).
Backlash has to be set & tolls like micrometers, etc are used if that tells ya anything

Also, if you have ever thought about a locker or limited slip unit, when you regear is the time to do it to cut down on labor costs since it will be apart anyway..
