Well, with over 2 million miles of trucking behind me,(wife has the same) I can say one thing about the gps units. Men and their toys. Never used one.Never needed one. There is no substitute for Rand McNally though. I can however throw this one out for you. Be careful. The company I lease my equipment to had a driver get pretty messed up by a guy that was looking at his "toy" gps instead of driving the car. Also it is on the table for discussion at the FMCSA (federal motor carriers safety admin.) and the NHTSA (natioal highway and safety admin.) They are considering banning these units, the tv monitors, and other such distractions from being used while the vehicle is in motion. There is already laws on the books against tv's from being used while in sight of the driver while the vehicle is in motion but enforcement so far has been lax. It would be nice for everyones safety if it was enforced.
I stick my Magellan in the left corner of the windshield in a suction mount and have left it there. I used it mostly for the speedometer and altimeter. I am looking at the road at all times and it avoids for me to look down at the gauges for my speed. I still keep an eye on my gauges, just when the time is right. So to me this is a driving advantage while still using a "tool", sorry after being so helpful, I just can't call it a toy.
