LAST EDITED ON 10-Jul-01 AT 03:54 PM (EST)[p]over the past weekend my family and i went to florida for a family reunion. in the jacksonville area. now i lived there 15 yrs before moving to ohio. i trailered my jeep down for the purpose of going to saint augistine, driving on the beach and doing some surf fishing. i was looking forward to the fishing most of all. now imagine my hate and discontent when i loaded my jeep up with poles, chairs, and all the necessary equipment to fish and discover that the beach, after 30 yrs, is now closed to vehicle traffic! because some stupid idiot was drunk and ran over two girls on the beach. if you've never driven on the beach in florida, you won't understand, with the sun and girls in bikini's laying all over the place, this is or was one the greatest things ever. and now, it's gone. once again, what the bad do the good suffer. thousands of people drive on the beach every year without incident and for them to close the beach to vehicles because of the actions of a very few is unacceptable. the sheriffs dept should be held responsible, because you are not suppose to have alcohol on the beach. but i guess with land closures all over, this is just par for the course.
One person always has to ruin it for someone else. It happens all the time. You might write a complaint letter to the city or the county who owns the beach. If you get enough people to sign a petition you can over rule the new law. I doubt your the only one who disagree's with the law.
You may not be familiar with South Texas, but you can drive almost 4 hours of beach from Padre Island to South Padre Island. I have ridden some part in a regular truck. Very interesting but parts are very boring too.
Here on Oahu, Hawaii, ALL the beaches are closed to vehicles of any kind and it has nothing to do with safety but everything to do with money. I'm surprised that 4x4's haven't been outlawed by the old loudmouthed but rich ladies of the Outdoor Circle. We have one motocross track left, no go-kart tracks, and the drag and oval car tracks are fighting to stay. I'm afraid we've lost the war in this feel-good society that wants to stamp out anthing that is fun and gives men satisfaction.
Most of the time the people driving the beaches are few and those who do, do so safely. However, during holidays or popular vacation periods, idiots get drunk, careless, or both, and want to show off and injure someone. Those people are the ones who ruin good things for others.
Up here in the midwest, during winter, idiots drive their 4X4 out on a frozen lake after "partying" and are surprised when the ice cracks and they fall thru! Party at home,or get a sober driver, not behind the wheel!!
