Well, just got off the phone with my mom, she is really scared this time. The worst thing is, there isn't squat I can do about it (can't get down there in time). I hope that thing veers back out over the Atlantic. Even in her fear she says to me: "I'll wear one of those orange hunting vests, if I blow away at least you'll be able to find me".
We have our blizzards up here...but they pale in contrast to those hurricanes. I went through a typhoon, different name for a hurricane I think, in 'Nam, but it wasn't as nasty as the one that happened after I left country.
I hope the storm continues to downgrade as it gets closer. My heart and prayers are with everyone there.
I have experienced hurricane force winds in a few places. They are not like anything else, 'cepting maybe a tornado. Why anyone would want to stay put for one, I do not know, but my friends in the threatened part of Florida have boarded up their windows (actually the worst thing to do, but whatever) and are staying put.. I do not wish to experience any more hurricanes, Typhoons, Tornados, or other such weather, that kills. Being blown 70 feet laterally, gaining 30 feet in elevation, and landing in deep mud, is no fun at all. Trying to get the mud out of my rifle muzzle was even less fun.
I have the people of Florida in my thoughts, just now, and hope they are all safe.. I would, however, like to suggest that they move, at the soonest possible time. A friend told me that Florida was Paradise, but for the hurricanes. That one fact is sufficient to convince me not to live there. Paradise cannot have a nasty secret like hurricanes - ergo, Florida is not Paradise.
Well - I am NOT allowed to leave. I am currently sitting in the station in between calls while we await for the hurricane to strike us. Our location is only supposed to have about 70+ mph winds but we are supposed to get about 14 inches of rain.
We are still cleaning up from Charlie. The eye on that one directly passed over us as it exited the state...
Oh well, last time I talked to my mom (4PM EDST), the shingles were comming off the roof and the felt was flapping. Won't be too long until the ceilings cave in. I guess I'll be loading up and heading down soon. I haven't been able to reach her since, I hope all is well with her.
Summerfield. North of Leesburg south of Ocala, right off US 441. On the county line between Lake and Marion. (To be exact, about 1100 feet west of US 441 and 300 feet north of the Lake/Marion line.)
Called my sister in Clearwater tonight. I woke her. She says its raining, the wind is blowing. She said her house is locked down for a hurricane, its now a tropical storm. No worries, got work in the morning. Thats all I wanted to hear, good news.
My friends in Ft Pierece....those are the ones who concern me. Those people are nuts. I wouldnt be suprised if they were windsurfing last night.

They likely got a good dose of the dirty side of the hurricane. Heavy rains and a pretty steady wind. The good news is that I am not seeing any reports of widespread damage coming out of that area. As well the Florida National Guard and FEMA are not deploying to that area so it must be OK. Good luck!
Michael Littman, how are things in Homestead? i have family down there and havent heard from them to know how they are doing through this hurricane.
Everyone in Homestead is fine. We had some rough weather for the last few days with minor flooding and some tree limb damage but things look very good. The worst part for us is that there was no gas available and no grocery stores open. The Winn Dixies and Publix opened late yesterday but are out of things like milk, eggs, bread, etc. I reckon by late today things should be getting back to normal around here. We didn't even lose our electricity during the storm in my area.
And now you guys have Hurricane Ivan, god I hope this one misses Florida, our very best wishes to all of you in the sunshine state, from all of us in California.......And my family....
thats good to hear, i have an aunt and uncles and many cousins there in Homestead, and its good to know y'all are ok, and my wife says that they are missionaries so she knows that they will be out helping everyone else that weren't so fortunate.
