My wife stopped in a parking lot today to get some supplies at a shop. She left onboard our 2 dogs (and a cat for that matter) while she ran inside.
She left the vehicle idling with the A/C going so the animals would not overheat. It was a very hot day (90 degrees plus). When she came back about 10-15 minutres later the engine had stoped and the electrical system was paralysed (the keypad was inoperative). Now my wife tells me that this has happned to her in the past (the vehicle - 2002 explorer 4 door) when the truck has "shut itself down".
The tow trucj driver says he has heard that some vehicles has this shut off feature if they are left idling for too long. I have never heard about this or anything like it. Can somone shed some light on what is going on here ??
I don't know of any feature that will intentionally shut down while idling, especially with disabling the electical systmems. When you say paralyzed, do you mean that there was no power to anything, or only the keyless entry. 1st suggestion would be to pull the codes. Even if the check engine light didn't come on, there could be some stored codes in the PCM.
I would be checking the battery for charge and connections, with the engine idling and the a/c on, your charging system may not be up to snuff, and when the system voltage drops so will the PCM, so it stalls the engine and there is not enough juice to operate the keypad... my 2cents
