The bumper covers on my 93 Aerostar were cracking and I taped over the cracks with; Gorilla Waterproof Patch & Seal Tape . Cleaned them with mineral spirits and then 90% rubbing alcohol and then taped over the cracks. Still holding after 1 year, the cracks have not spread. The tape is black and if care is taken looks pretty good. The tape will keep your cover together. I have been looking for covers for over a year and cannot find them. The local Pick and Pay, got in only 1 Aerostar during my search. It had unusable bumper covers, I did get good taillights, front passenger seat with cool locking drawer , light switch and unused ashtray. I did not need the ashtray but it looked brand new
I am thinking of taking some schedule 40 or heavier 4" plastic pipe and making a rear bumper. Gotta be better than factory although it will look funky.
This thread has been around a while, but Im now starting to feel this too with my bumper covers - the front is cracked really bad right along where the driver side bolt is there... you can see the bumper under it at this point...
So my question is - what do we all do? - I have an '89 shorty - people have said forget repair kits for this... I'd love to just buy new replacement covers - but are they made after market? - are they $1000 for a pair? - can I use an alternative that would just bolt on? I really don't wanna screw with the design too much but Im open to anything at this point
Has anyone tried fiberglass and epoxy? Marine/boat type repair might work. I'm sure I will get a chance to test that one day. As of now I have cracks but none missing, yet.
I would not try to take a bumper cover off,, A few years ago I actually found a perfect front one, when I took the old one loose it exploded into many pieces. The one I got was old also and fragile. So fragile the guy that I bought it from knew it, and instead of shipping it,, knowing it would be in pieces on arrival. He drove it 2.5 hours to my house.
my bumpers are not so bad as to explode when removing them. I had to remove the front one to glue the cracked pieces. I also noticed the side bracket on one side was coming unwelded (plastic welding). I reglued it and clamped it overnight. So far it has held tightly.
The glue I am using is E6000 (not 600) sold at Dollar stores. At first it seems lame but when it dries, the parts are tight. Haven't had any luck with epoxy or JB Weld but E6000 has done the job.
That perfect front bumper I put on a couple years ago is not perfect anymore, I had the tranny done recently and the guy leaned on it and cracked it, its not to bad and I can't be mad at all. We all know how easy it is to do, a few weeks before that I was loading some fence posts and lightly leaned on the back one and cracked it also. Bummer
Depending on your taste, I didn’t want to waste the money on an old one that would crumble so I just took my bumper cover off and Bedliner sprayed my bumper. Doesn’t look terrible either. Could definitely modify to make look better though. No issues with being pulled over for it either
