I bought a Mile Marker SE9500 winch. Will the stock Motorcraft 650CCA battery be OK for now or should I upgrade to a new one with 850CCA? I really don't want to buy a new battery unless I need it. I'm not a crazy offroader just wanted the winch for back up just in case. I'm hoping that I'll never need it.
You will need a better CCA battery. I have a winch on my Jeep and use a deep cycle battery. The battery I had before the Deep cycle was like 1000CCA and worked fine.
You need more reserve capacity than you do CCA. A deep cycle is what you want for running winches / lights. It's more important to have that reserve than it is to have CCA. Check out the Optima Yellow Tops or the Red Tops. Both would work for you. Now if you plan on using the winch with the vehicle running and only occassionally, don't worry about it, the one you have will be fine. But for using it extensively and without the engine running, definitely look at a Yellow Top.
Optima batt.s are great!! I've had a red top in my jeep for over 6 years and love it. I've never hand a problem with it ever! Threre worth the money. You can mount them anywere you want to, even upside down. there compleatly sealed. go with either the yellow or red, but I'd probably go yellow for winching.
Just purchased two Optima Yellow Tops for our 2002 F-250 7.3L PSD.
We tow our travel trailer a lot and quite often, with some federal, state and private RV campsites, generators are not allowed to be used after certain hours, even in sites without electricity.
Therefore, it is necessary to keep the frig and lights working in our trailer. I have found Optima Yellow Tops, which are both combination starting and deep cycle batteries, to fit our needs perfectly. A little higher, but they, along with Optima Red Tops, are outstanding batteries, IMO.
I always have a 1000 cca battery in my truck..I also have a 200 amp alt that makes a big difference on long pulls. I have a warn 9000. I keep the truck running if I can and I think the alt will do 100 amps at idle. With that being said I'd get a bigger battery...
I use a yellow top in my Jeep and will soon be using a dual battery setup with another red top.
A yellow or red top will work fine for winching as long as your alternator is up to snuff. They also last forever.
Is a 9 or 10K winch enough for a SD? I use a 9K Warn on my Jeep. I think the rule of thumb is to get one that is 1.5 times the weight of the rig it is going on.
