serpentine belt question

1987 f-150 fuel injected 4.9 litre straight six. How does the serp belt routing differ on one with air conditioning versus one with out? Mine has air but it doesnt work and was thinking ahead to when the bearings fry and i want to bypass this pully. Is it as simple as a shorter belt? Or do i need an idler?? So i figure some one must have one with no air and can fill me in... So anybody??

Later chris

Sorry man, I can't relate to your I6 as I have the 302. However, my A/C clutch bearings fried and I was unable to use a shorter belt due to the fact that the PS pulley is so low on the block that it would rub back on itself over the water pump no matter what size belt I tried. I finally had to buy the idler from FORD and it cost about $40.00 CDN which was the same price, or less, that a shorter seprentine belt. Just thought that you should be aware of the relatively low cost of the idler pulley.

Cheers!

Mike

The same belt is used for ac or non-ac on the 4.9. Here is the routing on a non-ac 4.9, starting from the alternator, over the alt- under the tensioner-over the power steering-under the crank shaft pulley-looping back over the water pump-under the air pump-back to over the alternator. Really there is only one change from what you have now. Right now after the ac the belt goes over the water and then under crank shaft pulley and then under the air pump; without ac, from the power steering pump it goes under crank shaft pulley then over water pump pulley, than back to the air pump.
