On a full floater part of the axle sticks out from the wheel about oh I don't know 4-6 inches? Check my gallery and look at my '250 to see how a FF looks. A semi-floating will be almost flush with the wheel.

Reason: adding
Primarily strength. The full floater is rated to carry much more weight. Any heavy duty 3/4 ton truck & up will have a full floater rear axle. This applies to everything from dump trucks to busses.
Although I did once see a dodge 1 ton conversion van/RV with a semi-floater. Anyone surprised?
A F.F Carries the weight on the bearings. The axle shaft just spins the tires. A semi F carries the weight on the bearings and the axle shaft. That is why the F.F is stronger.
