I have used a lot of left handed drill bits. Sharpen them like right handed ones except the cut is different direction. Mainly left handed bits are used to remove right hand threaded bots. Not much different just counter punch a hole and then drill with it.

I've used left hand drill bits and had good luck removing broken bolts.

left hand drill bits

Where would one buy these drill bits? Normal hardware stores (e.g., Home Depot, Lowes) would not carry these would they? Or does one have to order them on-line?

TIA

left hand drill bits

Just so somebody doesn't think your talking about these bits like they are left handed crescent wrenches, or skyhooks, I thought I'd help to clarify the obvious.

"Left handed" referes to the fluting of a drill bit opposite those commonly found at the hardware store. They are note used strictly by those lefties. They are note for drilling left sided holes or holes through the left side.

Reversed drill bits are for drilling through rusted/stuck fasteners in the hopes that if you cut fast enough and hard enough, your bit will bite into the fastener and unscrew it during the drilling process. These are also refered easy-outs but are not true easy-outs.

I find these bits work very well on smaller fasteners rather than large bolts. If a bolt (say a 3/8 shank) or larger is stuck, the chances of a reverse bit getting it out before drilling all the way through are very slim.
IMHO.....Krosati

left hand drill bits

An ACE Hardware store had wronghanded(left) bits. The bits were
in the same area as the tap/die/extractor section.
Been awhile since I heard the skyhook mentioned.

left hand drill bits

Well my Sears drill is so old that it has a metal case and only runs in one direction. Guess I can't use it with left handed drills. But what a drill. Gotta be at least 40 years old, but that thing just won't quit.

You mean there was a time when reversible drills did not exist? That's gotta be old.
