9" rearends from '57-'72 F100 will be a direct bolt on. '57-'67 shared the same brake components as the '52 so it'll be a direct fit and appearance. I recently bought a 9" rear end from a '57 for my '51 F1 Panel.
If you want something newer, then the 8.8" rear end from an Explorer fits as well with not many modifications. You can also find Explorer rearends with disc brakes.
There was an article on FTE about rear ends and what could be used, but I can't seem to find it now.
Do you have any photos of your 3rd member swap that you can put in a gallery. Through the years did the axles vary in width? Does anyone know what will bolt into a 52 that has 8 lugs?
Stev8e,
I would imagine that the 57-72 with the 8 lug rears would also fit under the 48-52.
I don't know for sure but it seems like the width should be the same as well as the spring pad locations.
I have a F1 and I stuffed a 9" from a 60 under mine, dang near a direct bolt in replacement with the exception of shock mounts
Shocks? They were an option on F3 trucks, and mine didn't get them. I did buy a set of mounts from an F2, but I have not installed them because I am considering swapping the whole axle.
I had to fabricate the lower shock mounts that go on the rearend. The axle tubes of the original differential are a smaller diameter (2" or 2 1/2") than the axle tubes on a 9" diff (3") so that the lower shock mounts would not work
The 56-72 Dana 60's are the same width and spring pads. The later 67-72 are more recomended since they have higher splined axles. If you want to go bigger you can get a 67-80 Dana 70 out of a F-350. They are dually axles and the width is 1" wider but the spring perches are the same.
Hi medo1. Sorry one of the moderators didn't welcome you to FTE earlier ... so ... welcome to our little corner of the world here in the 1948-1960 Forum!
You've already met a few of the regulars - a knowledgeable and helpful crew that is also a bit crazy (just a little bit). We'll try to answer your questions and sometimes even include useful information!
We try to keep a family atmosphere here and are pretty friendly. Except for a couple fellas we keep on a leash when they forget to take their medication (me, for one).
