cool weather flooding

I've been having a weird problem with my truck. Its a 76 4wd, with a 74 390ci. When the ambiant temp is b/t about +5 and -5celcious the truck wants to flood out. It starts up fine and will idle fine, but about 100feet down the road it will start to flood out and it will keep doing this until I shut the truck off for a couple minutes and restart it, and then it will run perfect! I don't think that its the carb b/c it has manual choke and I've checked that its opening up fully and I had the exact same problem with a completly different carb on it. Another weird thing is if I plug in the block heater for a few hours the problem will not happen. the distributor cap, rotor, wires, coil and ignition module are all new, and the cap has no moisture in it when the problem occurs.

Any help is greatly appreciated

You have carb iceing. The pressure drop thru the carb and fuel atomization cause the moisture in the air to freeze on the carb venturi. Make sure that your OEM heated air intake system is working properly. The temperature and distance it will take to "freeze" depends upon the humidity and the air temp. Using the block heater just pre-heats the carb also.

I have the same problem, I live in Washington state, and do not have the OEM carb preheat. I found that if I start the truck and let it run until I get about a 120-130 degree (F) water temp which is about 5 minutes, then shut it off for 3-4 minutes, letting the heat soak up into the carb. It is just part of my morning routine. I do not have a clutch radiator fan, so at high idle when I first start it, I can pretty much forget any heat staying under the hood. So far we have only hit the upper 20's (in the 7 months I have had this truck), I don't know how well it will work when it gets REALLY cold...

good luck,

ackus

thanks for the info guys, it makes sense to me now.I actually do have the heatstack hooked up, but I guess thats not enough, I e-mailed Holley tech service to see what they recomend.
Ackus, you were wondering what your truck was going to do when it gets really cold. My truck only has this problem when its b/t 5 to -5
celsious, I guess its becaus of the humidity related to that temp range. My truck runs fine when its really cold out, and it gets pretty cold up here in Flin Flon Mb,Can.

I am surprised it still does it if the flapper in the aircleaner snorkel is working.
Somebody hasn't put hot rod intake gaskets on it that block the heat riser passages have they? There is a heat passage that runs from head to head underneath the carb.
Does your model truck have a heat riser valve in the exhaust pipe? If it does, these help force hot exhaust up under the carb to help the problem.

My truck doesn't have a heat riser valve on the exhaust pipe. The intake gaskets were just part of a standard Fel-pro kit so I would think that they would have those pasages.I have an edelbrock performer intake on it, could this have something to do with it?
