They have (for years) used the brake light switch to disable the cruise control.

I take it that that's a safety problem, as in, if the switch goes bad, you can't turn off the cruise with the brake, and Ford's liable.

Imagine the accountants doing the cost-analysis of both

OK, sure but what if the master-cylinder switch goes bad and the truck catches fire... Which is worse? I think it could happen at anytime, while driving or while that truck is parked and shut-off since there is power to that switch at all times. If the brake light switch fails and the cruise is on, I can 1) press the clutch (the clutch-interlock switch also disconnects the cruise.), 2) take it out of gear or 3)turn the key off, but if that damned thing burns and catches the truck on fire while I'm in it? I'd rather have a BOO-switch with a small chance of failure than the fire-hazzard that's currently in use.

And so around, and around, we go, sorry, the brake light switch didn't deactivate your cruise-control so you hit the guard-rail.

Gee, now you say that our re-engineered cutoff burns the truck down to the ground? Well, that's better than running off a cliff, right?

I'm being sarcastic, I love Fords, better engineered than anything else, but sometimes, I don't know...

Just a note 578, (2) take it out of gear, does not turn off the cruise. When I drive easy, as I mostly do, I usually shift without the clutch. One day I was in cruise and coming down a hill to an exit ramp so I just bumped it out of gear. I was sure shocked to see as I slowed down the engine raced WAY up. Your truck does not know when your out of gear if you don't push in the clutch!!

The point wasn't that taking it out of gear turns off the cruise control, the point is that the truck will no longer receive power to the wheels allowing you to stop. (And yes, my truck does the same thing... the stupid thing will go to 5500 rpms and keep bumping into the rev-limiter ad-infinitum.)

There's always the CC OFF switch. I'd think that would disengage cruise if the brake light switch was to fail.
