96 Explorer third brake light

96 Explorer third brake light
Does anyone have experience w/ third brake lights? The one on my Explorer is out, and I think I know what the problem is, but have some questions. There is an electronic box under the plastic cover on the rear hatch, I'm guessing it's a transformer for the LED brake light, and I think it's faulty. This part has a sticker saying it's high voltage and should only be replaced by Ford personel.
My questions are:
What are the proper procedures for handling/testing this part?
What is the correct output voltage if this part is working?
Is this a dealer only part?

You guessed correctly, 95% chance it the transformer. The third brake light is neon, not LED and the transformer converts 12VDC to high voltage AC. There is no known test procedure for the lamp or transformer. I have a '96 and had the same problem, followed the advice the king folks on this forum, replaced the transformer and I'm back in business. This is a dealer only part, I think it was about $90. Do not try to test the transformer. Good luck.
