Help

I own a 1999 explorer sport. The check engine light came on and after checking under the hood it is obvious why. The sensor located on the driver side of the fuel injection is fried. I'm not sure what this sensor does but it had two vacuum hoses connected to it but now there is nowhere for them to connect as the sensor is really melted right in the middle. Main questions are can I assume that the sensor went bad or is there something that would make this sensor fail in this manner? What is this sensor called, what does it do, and what is the cost of replacement? I live in a very small town and there is nowhere to have the code pulled unless I pay the ford place to do this. The engine is a 4.0L ohv. The sensor is flat and rectangular in shape. It is mounted to the intake manifold just behind the airconditioner compressor. The electrical hook up is on the flat side near the end. I took the truck to NAPA and they don't know what the sensor is.

Can you follow the vacuum hoses to determine where the come from and / or go to? That would help to determine which sensor it is.

Any chance the dealer would tell you what it is and sell you one?
