I'm having a problem with my new,to me, '02 F-150 (4.2L 5sp). Whenever the truck is at normal operating temp, it grinds everytime going into third. Could this be all clutch related or am I facing a possible interal tranny problem ? I'm assuming the owner before me beat this truck because the u joints were distroyed (47,000 miles).
Mine used to have an ocassional grind from 2nd to 3rd, but not very much. Didn't keep it, so don't know if would have gotten worse. You might have a damaged synchro
my 99 4.6 4x4 grinds sometimes going into 3rd gear. I guess we are not alone. It made me a little nervouse when I bought it with 70k on it, but after over 2 years of hard word and 30,000 miles more, its no worse. The only major complaint I have is the 42mph shimmy i cant get rid of.
I've tried pumping the clutch twice and it does reduce the grind signifigantly. As long as the tranny doesn't blow up I suppose I can live with it for now, although I think I'll be looking to trade this in next spring, assuming no other major problems arise.
Crunching into 3rd gear is a common problem on the Mazda 5 speed transmission.
The cure is usually to replace the 3rd/4th synchro assembly.
Most of them will go just about forever even with the problem.
Sometimes changing the oil will help.
