removing steering shaft

I have a 69 f100 three on the tree. I am trying to fix a steering problem that is located on the column. There are broken pieces in the column that are causing it to come apart. I got a new column from a junkyard, but they sent me one with a broken shifter and shifter collar. I want to take the new steering shaft along with whatever pieces needing to be replaced and put them in my old column. I have taken the steering shaft out of my old column, but that was easy because the bearing was broken. Does anyone know how to remove a steering shaft from a steering column without breaking the bearing or any other pieces?
thanks for any info
brad

I rebuilt my steering column with all new bearings and stuff cause it had broken stuff in it. It's been 5 years and mine is off a 72 with auto trans. I don't remember the details but I do remember it was pretty easy to get apart and put back together.

Where did you get the rebuild kit or parts? I checked at the local autoparts stores and they didn't have anything.

I bought them from a local Ford dealer. But I bet you can now get them from lmctruck.com or dennis-carpenter.com. In my steering column the shift tube had broken and someone before me welded it back together but it was the wrong length. The bearings on each end of the column were both shot and I think there is some sort of plastic bushing that sits in there also. I found a shift tube at a junk yard and the bearings and stuff at the dealer and put it all back together good as new.

Rebuilding one is about like striping a complicated fire arm apart and putting it back together for cleaning. There will be some small details for you to keep up with, but if you start with a clear work area and take notes, you will be fine. Yes, They have most parts you could need at those companies and also Blue Oval . com. Best of luck, you can do it! Mike.
