On page 79 of my manual, it says my keys are programmed to my truck. Does this mean that it has a 'chip'? The reason i ask is that my keys are not like my wife's 2002 F-250 with a chip. Mine are little bitty square ones, they are not oval and thick like hers.
"ag-ford-4X4" Welcome to the site hope you will receive the answers you need and then stay around awhile and check out everything there is to offer.
Probably not. The ones with the chip are thicker and larger. The manual probably is written to cover all options and should say somewhere that if equipped your key will be programmed to the truck
im curious if any of the SD's have them. I did a search and i believe they do not. I figured a lariat F-250 4x4 of all trucks would have this system...the focus has it for crying out loud.
Moreover, the manual title is 2005 F-250....and that part i was reading says "your key IS programmed...."
Do a search for PATS. (Passive Anti Theft System) The plastic part of those key's are a bit larger the plastic part of our keys. That's where the chip is located. You'll find that no Super Duty's (up to 2004) are equipped with them (stock). Obviously it was thought of, just never implemented. I'm not sure if the 05's have them or not. Most of the other Ford vehicles are equipped.
'05 SD's dont have 'em.....cause i have one without PATS. I guess its ok. I park mine in my garage. For home use i find the GUNS system is far superior to PATS.
In the '05 owner's manual, it also states that trucks equipped with the diesel engine also have a lever actuated HFCM (where in reality, it does not)
on edit: I wish I did have the PATS key though
most ace stores do sell them but they never seem to work like the stock ones i had 2 made and it was hit or miss sometimes it would notice the key and start then others nothing. i just bought 2 from ford for 30 for both and never had a single issue. you also need both keys to program a new one.
My '06 manual has the same info. But the key is still not chipped. The manual also showes a lever actuated HFCM. But when you get under the beast there is no lever. I wish I had the lever.
Ive seen several 1999 sd trucks that had the pats system , had to put a module in them to install the remote start system, have also seen one with power teleoscopic mirrors !
If your key is a big fat plastic cased one, the plastic is about the size of a pack of matches. DON'T loose them. My 2004 Lincoln has programmed keys that are chipped and cost something like $30 each to make new ones IF YOU HAVE AT LEAST 2 WORKING COPIES.
If you only have one copy, you must go to the dealer who will charge you something like $70 for each copy since the computer wants to see 2 working keys before it will program a new one. Sounds like you always want to have 3 keys. 1 to use and 2 spares that are locked up in the family vault.
If you LOSE your only key, lord help you. The manual says you must be towed in and it says something like, it will be expensive.
I hope none of you have these keys, they are an expensive PITA that must be programmed at a dealer or at a few specilized key shops.

Quite right! I used to work at Thrifty and the customers would ask for both sets of keys, and then lose both. We'd charge $50 to have a regular non-chipped key cut, and $550 for a chipped. Customers would be p'ed off after they heard that one!
