I have done a search as far as removing muffler and cat but not the answers I was looking for. I am looking to delete the cat and muffler until I get a 4" turbo back exhaust. The thing I am concerned about is getting codes and drops in MPG. I have read that these will somtimes throw codes. Also I have heard about unplugging the EGR so that the drop in MPG will come back since the ECM will not read the drop in pressure and change from the optimum setting. Can someone please help me out. Maybe you know where Im coming from as far as its brand new and dont want any problems. Thanks in advance, Eric.
I was worried too about the codes etc, especially because I have a CA/MA emission vehicle. I'm running a 4" turbo back without the cat, and a straight through muffler. No codes, and certainly no CEL. So far so good for the first 10,000 miles. Two oil changes, and the dealer hasn't said anything about it either.
I have an 05 and haven't noticed any drop in MPG with this setup, I haven't noticed any power gains, or any change really either. I'm sure the EGT's might be lower, but with the stock engine tuning, it doesn't make much difference.
The sound is awesome though!!! That's really why I changed it out...
I wouldn't bother disconnecting your EGR valve though. The engine uses a backpressure sensor not the EGR to monitor backpressure. Read the EGR disconnect thread for so much more info about it.
On my 05 if I disconnect the EGR valve, the CEL comes on, and boost is limited to about 20 psi on the factory guage. When I plugged it back in, all power came back and boost hits almost 30.
I use PowerService every fillup and just hope the soot is minimal.
You'll be fine the truck will only run better and potentially at a better MPG! All the rumors that have been passed out by various sources are just lies, the diesels love open exhaust etc. Call us if you have any questions on exhaust systems we stock all the MBRP systems in aluminized, 409 and 304 stainless in singles and duals etc.
thanks for the help so far. my brother is running the 4" magna flow on his with no cat and flow through muffler on his 03 7.3 and sounds nice. Maybe Ill look that route. My exhaust guy wants 110 to delet the cat and put in a 12" free flow muffler to stock exhaust. good or badd idea? and what about price?
