Defueling the Engine
Would you get better longevity and fuel efficiency out of the 6.0 if you went to the power rating that the non-Ford International VT365 has?
Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my truck and it is basically stock except for the muffler delete pipe. It has had its "issues" but all of them have been taken care of by the fantastic service department I take it to (yes, I love my dealer!). I also love my current MPG (19.5 @ 70 unloaded), but being an Engineer, I am always thinking about different stuff and trying to figure them out.
My goal is to have my truck last for at least 10 years and 350,000 miles. My old 1992 F150 with the 302 went to 247,000 before I sold it. The engine was still strong and only using 1/2 quart of oil every 2500 miles.
So I will ask all you guys what you think would happen if I loaded in a defueled program for daily driving/commuting and then reverted back to stock when I need the extra power. Would it increase mpg and longevity or actually make the engine work harder at cruising speed because of the lowered torque/hp?
You may be able to improve fuel economy by re optimising the injection timing, but a defueler is just effectively an egg under the accelerator pedal, if you drive sedately you it will be the same.
Same goes for lengevity. Drive it carefully, and be mechanically sympathetic to it and you should be fine.
IMO...defueling a Ford 6.0 could actually be detrimental to it's life span. But, that's just me.
