Where does everyone mount their tach ? I know most probably do on the column, but does anyone make a nice chrome mounting cup that goes on the column? Most tachs I see are 3 3/8". Is this what everybody has?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Oct-02 AT 09:30 AM (EST)]In my '73 I have a older 2" tach mounted to the top of the steering column. It covers up the odometer, 0-10mph and 90-100mph on my speedo, but when I'm using those speeds I don't care to look at the speedometer anyway. (I can see it all if I lean forward). I like the smaller one, it's not obnoxiously huge - it's just a daily driver so the rpm isn't critical, I just like to know...
All the tachs I've ever bought come with a housing and bracket to mount to column or dash. You could get a chrome tach, Summit used to have a chrome VDO tach. Lots of trucks have them on the column, either top or to the side. Some mount them on the top or bottom of the dash. I saw a '78 non-a/c truck with a tach mounted in the blank space over the wiper switch, where the a/c vent would be... It's your truck, do it the way you like.
I mount a 3 3/8" on the column a little to the left. i have a sun pro super tach and with the backet they give, i use a couple black zip ties to attach it to the column and it looks really good. the zips blend in with the column and it sits really well. Be sure to put the little rubber pad under the bracket if you do this, keep the tach from rotating down the column.
I started out with a 2 inch tach on the column. Now I have a monster tach mounted on top center of the dash using one of the dash screws as the hold down and ran the wire through the factory speaker grill. Ck my gallery there is a picture of the location.
I did it a little differently. I have a 3 on the tree so I couldnt put a tach on the column (besides, I didn't want to obstruct other guages). I mounted mine down low on the dash to the left of the column. Easy to see and doesn't get in the way of the other guages.
I'm using the smaller SunPro basic Tach, I think it's about 2 inches. It came with column or dash mounting hardware and instructions. I put mine on the dash centered with my steering wheel. It's just a daily driver, so I don't need all the bells and whistles and just like to know what my rpms are, especially when my speedo needle starts bouncing. My eyes are good enough that I don't need the huge tachs. Also, since it's on the dash, I don't have to take my eyes off the road to look down at a column mounted tach! The downside to having a dash mounted tach is that some people might think you're a racer and try to challenge you to a street race. Hasn't happened to me yet, probably cause I use the smaller tach?
I have a 78 with out air conditioning. I took a 2" diamiter Mini Sun Tach, and mounted it on the left side of the dash where the air conditioning vent block off plate was. It is straight above the headlight switch. I just cut a round hole and secured it to the bezel. It looks good, and it is fluch mounted to the whole dash. Just like it was meant to be there.
I have a 5 inch monster tach w/ shift light mounted at the bottom of the dash over to the right of my 4 spd shifter, makes for good easy visibility and noone can see it outside the truck
I would put it either on the center of the dash pointing torwards you or on the column id also put a 5 inch autometer tach with the huge yellow shift light too :7 but thats just me. good luck!
I have a cheap 3 3/4" tach mounted on my column at the 10 or 11 o'clock position, and I have a column-shifted three-speed. It works well because it's easy to see without being showy and doesn't really block anything. You can see it at http://www.geocities.com/benwantland/f100.html
I mounted mine in the corner of the window on the drivers side, that way its not in the direct line of sight but is still easy to see. Ran the wire through a small crack beteen the dash and side of the truck.
Not easy attaching it there but worked out pretty well.
I just have a cheap tach but I mounted it with the same set up that you use on your starter heat shields. It is a metal looking band that works kind of like a zip tie but doesn't look like you just rigged it up with a zip tie (nothing wrong with that). Take a look at them at your local parts store.
It's mounted on the steering column like most others here. I have an Autometer 5" with a separate shift light. I have it only because it was cheap. In the pic, it looks like it covers the speedo, but it doesn't. The only guage I can't see when driving is the fuel guage(not that I want to see that anyway) It's mounted t othe column with a large SS hose clamp.
