Question Jacobs Milage ignition?

Anyone use a Jacobs ignition system?
I'm wanting better performance out of my 351w in my 1997 F-250hd. and a lil better MPG, 3.5" exaust helped, and an intake is in order, but how about that ignition?

any thoughts might help a newb out.

thanks
Neil.

Hi Neil, and welcome to FTE! Please check out the guidelines, they'll give you some information that you'll need when posting here. Here's a link:

As to your question, I can't speak of any personal experience with Jacobs ignition products (at least, not since I bought one at a swap meet about 30 years ago) but if you hang on a bit I'm sure someone will be by who can answer your question.

Is there something about Jacobs in particular that interests you, or have you looked into any of the other products out there like MSD or Mallory?

Thank you For the welcome,
I am turned on to Jacobs from a Very trusted Mechanic/ Mechanical Engineer Friend of mine. I have trusted his judgements before cause he's more directed towards reputation and raw performance verses who has the biggest advertising fund.
but I also like to here others opinions.

I've had an MSD 6AL in my 86 5.0 (EFI) for sometime now.
Seems to smooth out the idle a bit. Acceleration seems better.
No increase in mileage.

the stock ford ignition is more then up to the task. i would start with just a hi power coil and a good tune up with real good quality wires. can you explain the exhaust work you have done because 3.5 doesnt tell me nothing

I was going to put a Jacobs system in my Ranger last year. There were rumors on the Ranger forums that Jacobs had really crappy customer service if something went wrong.

3.5" exhaust on a 351 is going to probably hurt your low end torque and reduce the scavenging that pulls exhaust gasses away from the other cylinders.

MSD is designed to deliver spark for 20 degrees of crank rotation. Ford Ignition doesn't do this. It will allow for a more complete combustion of the air/fuel mix. It would help reduce HC emissions (unburnt fuel).

I can't honestly say that is was worth the $250 for the module an a coil.

Well the 3.5" exaust is From a Powerstroke 7.3L, cost me a case a beer and mine was utter junk. It is only from cat back. I did notice my milage go up a bit while highway driving.

What would you guys descibe as "real good wires" for a tune up. I have been using Napa wires.

Would Double platnum plugs help at all?

IF I did go Just the Coil route is that all I would have to replace, coil and wire?

Keep it coming this is my first v-8 to tinker with.

save your money! sparkplug wires will make your car purr as long as everything else is up to snuff. not saying expensive ones, just new ones.

autolites are nice because they have (or used to have) a lifetime warranty. i would turn them in once a year.

cheap copper autolite plugs are the best to use. Wires i suggest ford 9mm. if you want additional increases i suggest you look into a set of shorty headers and a bassini Y pipe. this will complete the exhaust setup you have currently and really wake things up. yes on the coil. the part #8227 MSD TFI coil
