"Coasting" Feature?

1988 F150, 300 I6, C6, 3.55, 235/65/15's There is a very noticeable down pull or "lugging" whenever I let off the gas, coasting. This occurs anywhere from 30 mph on up. The truck will lose about 10 MPH every five or six seconds. At about 27 or 28 MPH (coasting down) the transmission finally gives in to a freewheeling feel, and the truck doesn't drop speed as drastically.

I've had C6's before, (in cars) and didn't notice this strange dragging phenomenon. Is this just something I should expect in an older truck?

every EFI truck with an auto I've driven has done that. Its really annoying.

they just don't seem to "roll" when your off the gas.

I have the same setup in my 87, except I have 31" tires. When I'm on the highway, and I let off the gas to slow down for the ramps, I do get that slight "surge" as the tires and high gear ratio start to turn the motor. It wouldn't be bad if I had OD. Since I don't, it takes awhile before the rpms come down to "normal" and it down shifts.

Yeah, "annoying" is the word, that's for sure! I've even thought about installing an extra heavy flywheel (flex plate?) to see if that would help.

I would think that you'd then get the opposite effect when you take off - i.e. it would be slower.

is your torque converter unlocking ? these trucks have a" lockup" coverter wich works like a regular clutch when reach cruising speeds and should unlock when you ecelerate fast, hit the brakes or get off the gas I know on a gm if the coverter sticks and you come to a stop it will kill the engine just like if did not push in the clutch maybe you converter is not unlocking right away like it should
