I have a 92 and want a tachometer, and would like to completely remove my oil pressure and water temp guage and replace them with aftermarket pod-mounted gauges. Is it possible to simply remove the oil/water section of the cluster and replace it with a factory tach?
I saw the tech article that describes the tach add-on, but it seems that everyone is keeping all the features and adding a tach, I want to remove some features and put the tach in their place. The pix I saw in the article make it look like the tach can only go on the right side, and I am guessing that two smaller versions(less width) of oil/water and battery/fuel go on the left side.
Hmmm, you'd have to get a bit creative to pull that off.... the clusters with tach are physically different - both the plastic "body" and the laminated circuit on the back. The side modules are held in place by large pins on the back of the gauges, which push into springy connectors in the body. The PSOM just floats in the middle, held down by the modules to either side.
So you'd have to:
1) Cut the long pins down
2) Jump the appropriate lines from the big connector and solder them to the shorten pins
3) Find some way to hold the tach module in place
I'll try to take some pics of the tach and body of the cluster so you can see what I'm waffling about...
That doesn't sound fun, but, thx for the reply. I want to use aftermarket gauges, I would hate to have dead space or dead gauges sitting in the cluster...any other ideas. I'll rephrase the question.. How do I set up my 92 cluster to display speedometer/odometer, fuel and battery, and tachometer.
Thx for posting the pix, the tach looks tight in that jigsaw puzzle. I may just have to pull the offending gauge needles, paint the face black and put a Ford decal in there.
I am on the project..I just called the speed shop today and my three gauge pillar is in, I won't be able to see it for a couple days. I have picked out some autometer 2 1/16 inch gauges, oil and temp, and I'm still thinking what the third gauge will be, I have been thinking about getting a boost/vacuum gauge, just to look at my manifold pressure.
Then the big trick will be finding a good salvage yard cluster with the Tach.
