i was in 4wd on the beach in the outer banks, and planning on helping pull a one of the new land rover sports out of the sand. I turned to put myslef in position and in midturn i heard a pop. Then...I too was stuck. The front tires no longer rotated and my back tires spud. Long story short. I got stuck, the landrover was still stuck, and my friends jeep got stuck also. From what i understand the best way to diagnose the problem is to go under the truck and engage the 4wd and watch the parts turn. I was told that if i watched all the different parts of the drive train, i would be able to find the last part that turned and diagnose that it is the part following the last moving part. So my question is, has anyone else had this happen, and is this the best way to diagnose the problem.
Also as i drove down the highway from the beach in 2wd there was a constant clicking comming from the front left tire. If that is any clue.
but what would happen if i put it up and spun the whell while it was in 4wd, what would happen if it was the hub?
I watched it drive while it was if 4wd and all of the axels and shafts turned, so for what i can tell it must be in the u joint or hub
thanks
If it was the axel shaft, when you turn it, it would spin..depending on the damage, but not spin right. it would either make noise or turn out of center, or both. If that checks out, then the hub may have sheared itself smooth, or "stripped" out. If its the hub, get some Warns and replace. If it is the axel shaft, start shopping. You can probably get cheap replacements from a bone yard but no guarantee how much abuse they have gone through already. You can find new ones though probably at www.broncograveyard.com.
Since you have the axel shaft apart to replace, go with a new set of hubs as well unless you know for sure your current ones are still good.
The hub will break most of the time before the u-joint. I just replaced my broke hub yesterday. $70 for a set. the sad part is I had to buy them in pairs. Here is how you tell where it is broke at.
1. crawl under your truck and turn the front drive shaft. It shoud spin both your shafs to the wheels. Thats good
2. lock both your hubs. Now spin the drive shaft. which ever side shaft spins is the side that you have a broke ujoint or hub. because with both tires on the ground you should and your hubs locked, you should not be able to spin you front drive shaft. but if you can, it is broke.
The ujoint will be easy to tell. but if it is all intack, just go get your new hub.
is there any way to lock the hubs (automatic) with out putting it in four whell drive, bc, when i put it in four wheel drive and let it engage the hubs, i get under it and can turn anything. i was trying to do what everyone suggested before, but i dont see how i can with the transfer case locked in.
just for fun i tried (on my dads front lawn) to hit the gas to see if either of the front tires left a mark. The only thing that i could tell from this is that theres alot of power to the back wheels and that it was enought to leave two 12.5 inch wide troughs in the yard with no grass left in them.
If you look in the behind your wheels on the inside from the front - you can see both the shafts and u-joints on the IFS. If it is your u-joint you will be able to see it clearly. You can also turn the shaft manually from there with either a bar or a screw driver. If the shaft turns from there and the drive shaft and the other shaft don't turn, then you snapped a shaft. If one other shaft spins at the same time then the problem is in the hub. Whip the hub off. If it is shot, it's pretty easy to tell cause the inner part of it will be shredded. To pull the hub off for inspection or replacement, you don't even have to lift the vehicle. If the guts are shredded though, you might want to pull off the tire, rotor and clean everything good before slapping it back together. I've had good luck with superwinch manual locking hubs and the factory ford manual hubs.
i have a question if someone has an answer. ok. i have an 88 fullsize bronco, and will be in the process of doing a frame up. i dont particularily like my front hubs. they look nice, but i dont under stand why ford had to put those on. i will describe them as a chrome looking entire hub. i was wondering if one could replace them with warn or something. ps. i have only seen these hubs on a few of this vintage.
If you have auto hubs, replace them with manuals, autos are junk. If your u-joint was broken you would hear more of a bang, cause when the u-joint fails, it wipes out the axle shafts, you should beable to see if it was damaged easily. I'm guessing you trashed your hubs.
